Current Projects

The Downtown Guelph Business Association achieves its vision of creating a vibrant and user-friendly downtown by creating special project task forces. It also houses a standing committee that oversees events and promotions. Our current projects include:

Baker Street Redevelopment

The purpose of this group is to promote the redevelopment of the Baker Street lands. The DGBA supports redevelopment process that is inclusive of stakeholders and addresses the short and long term needs of downtown Guelph.

Civic Spaces

The purpose of this group is to improve and animate our civic spaces. The DGBA supports creating civic spaces that attract visitors and provide welcome spaces to both local residents and tourists alike. Current projects include working with the city and stakeholders to enhance the public space in front of the new Civic Administration Centre on Carden Street, and creating a new welcome sign to downtown Guelph in partnership with the department of tourism.  Click here to view the Strategic Urban Design Plan.

Intensification

The purpose of this group is to assess and remove barriers to infill development. The DGBA supports increased residential development in downtown Guelph and municipal grant programs to assist property owners.

Parking

The purpose of this group is to maximize on-street parking and to assess current parking inventory and allocation. The DGBA believes parking is an essential component of city infrastructure and should be a key consideration of all new developments. The DGBA supports free on-street parking and user-friendly parking solutions that address both short and long term parking needs.

Transit Transfer Station

The purpose of this group is to address the proposed move of the transit transfer station from St. George's Square to Carden Street in 2008. The DGBA supports moving the station and the subsequent redevelopment of St. George's Square into a pedestrian-friendly space. The impact of the move on parking infrastructure spaces is currently being addressed through a joint city/downtown task force.

Community Improvement Plan (CIP)

The purpose of this group is to work with the City of Guelph to create a long-term vision and capital investment strategy for downtown Guelph through broad stakeholder consultation. The DGBA supports the creation of a master plan for downtown Guelph to create a predictable investment environment in downtown Guelph.  Click here to view a copy of the CIP for downtown Guelph.

Disaster Planning for Small Businesses

The purpose of the Open for BusinessTM program is to help small businesses prepare for disaster-related interruptions. All DGBA members will be contacted throughout the summer to ensure that downtown Guelph is disaster-ready. The DGBA supports the implementation of this program and encourages all members to take advantage of this free opportunity.  Guelph may not be the prime target for a large hurricane, but as we have learned from the unfortunate fire in the Victoria and Gummer buildings, and multiple tornado warnings each year, we are not without our disasters.
