Noon Hour Concert in St. George's Square: Nabi Loney July 16

Friday, July 16

Nabi was born at the Guelph General Hospital, and has enjoyed Guelph her entire life. Her passion for music started as early as her speech. Following learning to talk, she placed her hands on the piano and began penning tunes about angels, weather patterns, and, of course, love. At thirteen, Nabi serendipitously stumbled into an open microphone, and began performing in public. After this shift, she was immersed in a lifestyle of music at home, high school, and anywhere else she landed. In her mid-teens, Nabi played the role of Lucy Locket in James Gordon’s Musical Hardscrabble Road, and discovered her love for the stage.  At sixteen years of age, Nabi played the Hillside festival as a youth performer. The next year, she was asked to sing at the festival once again. During this time, Nabi had developed vocal nodules (blisters on the vocal chords) from singing too heavy in a classic rock band. Following 4 months of disciplined vocal rest, the doctor declared Nabi free of the nodules, and she started fresh- asking herself, “What is MY voice?”. The answer was not surprising. It was serene, honest, and poetically clear. The result? 15 fresh songs, and the creation of her first album.

Now, a few years later, Nabi is still being stretched and formed into the musician she was created to be.  Though her music involves less writing about angels and weather patterns, the unwavering theme of love has stuck. Love is the core-driving force behind Nabi’s songwriting, followed closely by her deep appreciation of community. As one who values creativity and freedom of expression as pathways to healing and joyful living, she hopes her music can bring others closer in these worthwhile pursuits.  Nabi is beginning a new album in May.
